Speaking at a press conference in March, Trump was characteristically self-congratulatory, lavishing praise on himself for the “fantastic” job he’d supposedly done. But he did concede there was one area in which he was failing: “I think we’ve done a poor job,” he said, “in terms of press relationship.” His back-patting was entirely undeserved; the coronavirus crisis was out of control then, and is even worse now. But it laid bare that Trump views the pandemic not as a crisis of public health, but one of public relations.
